Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite

“Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite” is a landmark concert starring Elvis Presley, which took place at the Honolulu International Center on January 14, 1973. This concert was a significant event as it was broadcast live via satellite to audiences in Asia and Oceania. Due to the time zone differences, the show was presented with a delay in Europe. To address a programming conflict with Super Bowl VII and the fact that “Elvis on Tour” was playing in cinemas, NBC opted to air a ninety-minute television special of the concert on April 4 in the United States.

Elvis Presley had returned to performing tours throughout the United States in 1970, and Colonel Tom Parker, Presley’s manager, was inspired by Richard Nixon’s 1972 visit to China to promote a live broadcast concert featuring Presley. Parker arranged a deal with RCA Records and the NBC network to produce the concert, and the show aimed to benefit the Kui Lee Cancer Fund.

Marty Pasetta produced the program, and a filmed rehearsal concert took place on January 12. The live broadcast earned high ratings in the countries targeted, showcasing Presley’s global popularity. In the United States, the television special became NBC’s highest-rated program of the year and received positive reviews from critics.

The soundtrack album of “Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite” became Elvis Presley’s last chart-topper on Billboard’s album chart. The concert and its associated album are remembered as significant moments in Presley’s career, reflecting his continued influence and popularity on a global scale.

About the Song

“Burning Love” is a song that was originally written by Dennis Linde and released by Arthur Alexander in 1972. However, it gained major success when Elvis Presley recorded and released his version of the song later that same year.

Elvis Presley’s rendition of “Burning Love” was released as a single on August 1, 1972, with “It’s a Matter of Time” as the B-side. The song marked Presley’s final Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 2. It was kept from the top spot by Chuck Berry’s “My Ding-a-Ling.”

Elvis recorded the song at RCA’s Hollywood studios on March 28, 1972. The electric guitar opening and riffs were overdubbed and played by the songwriter, Dennis Linde himself. “Burning Love” reached number 1 on Cashbox’s Top 40 Charts for the week of November 11, 1972, and became Elvis’s 40th and final Top Ten hit on the Billboard US charts.

Presley performed “Burning Love” in at least two high-profile productions: the concert film “Elvis on Tour” and the later “Aloha from Hawaii” concert. Despite its success, the song remained a rare inclusion in Elvis’s live performances from 1972 onward.

The track was released on the album titled “Burning Love and Hits from His Movies, Volume 2” on November 1, 1972. Although the album’s subtitle suggested hits from movies, “Burning Love” was the only actual hit on the album.

A new backing track for the song was recorded in 1980, intended for the “Guitar Man” album, but it went unreleased until the year 2000. In 2015, a new orchestral arrangement for “Burning Love” was recorded, accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and released on the album “If I Can Dream.”

Lyrics

Lord Almighty
Feel my temperature rising
Higher, higher
It’s burning through to my soul

Girl, girl, girl, girl
You gonna set me on fire
My brain is flaming
I don’t know which way to go

Your kisses lift me higher
Like the sweet song of a choir
You light my morning sky
With burning love

I feel my temperature rising
Help me, I’m flaming
I must be a hundred and nine
Burning, burning, burning
And nothing can cool me
I just might turn into smoke
But I feel fine

‘Cause your kisses lift me higher
Like a sweet song of a choir
And you light my morning sky
With burning love

It’s coming closer

The flames are now licking my body
Won’t you help me
Feel like I’m slipping away
It’s hard to breath
And my chest is a-heaving
Lord, have mercy
Burning the hole where I lay

Your kisses lift me higher
Like the sweet song of a choir
You light my morning sky
With burning love
With burning love

I’m just a hunk, a hunk of burning love
Just a hunk, a hunk of burning love
Just a hunk, a hunk of burning love
Just a hunk, a hunk of burning love
Just a hunk, a hunk of burning love

Just a hunk, a hunk of burning love
Just a hunk, a hunk of burning love
